Posted at September 20, 2006, 10:28 am: Now I've been selling on eBay for over 2 years and I owe much of my success to Clear & Descriptive listings, Fair shipping prices, Good customer service & Keyword advertising. With so many sellers on eBay, and many selling duplicate items, it is easy for your listings to get lost in eBay's search result pages. This is why it is important to advertise to gain the needed extra traffic to your store or listings. While there are many services to choose from, there are a few things you need to consider before choosing. These being Price, Ease of use, Results & Service. I currently use AMPKeywords (ampkeywords-dot-com) formerly known as eBaykeywords for my eBay store & listings. I find their program is very straight forward and easy to use but most importantly produces RESULTS! After my first week of using the service I experienced over 55% increase in sales and about a 25% increase in final sale prices. I've also used Yahoo & Google but they did not work as well for my eBay store. I found that they work better for advertising my website. The concept behind keyword advertising is simple, as an eBay Seller, you bid the maximum cost-per-click (CPC) you are willing to pay anytime a user clicks on your ad. The ad is then ranked against the maximum CPC bid is for other sellers competing for the same keywords in the system. The higher your CPC bid, the higher your ad is ranked for that keyword, and the higher the likelihood that your ad will be shown first to a user who typed that specific keyword into a search. The ads are served to users in response to a keyword search that contains one of your keywords. For example, if you have the keyword Dell in your ad campaign and you are the high bidder on that keyword, when someone searches for that keyword your ad will display. The best thing about Pay-Per-Click advertising is that you only pay when your ad is clicked on. So even if your ad is displayed but not clicked on you are not charged, this is a great feature since you still get Free branding & exposure. Many people have problems choosing their keywords, they are not sure which ones to use. You can visit pulse.eBay.com to see the top keyword searches for your categories, and also check your store's traffic reports to see which keywords are most used to find your store. The adMarketplace Keyword system also suggests popular keywords based on your listed items. I always use focused keywords, in two or three-word sets, and then customize the links & ads to go to a specific category in my store or even to a specific listing. This way everyone who clicks on one of my ads is a pre-qualified, interested customer, and much more likely to buy. Another tip is to include a sale price in your ad message. Many advertisers make the mistake of being too vague with their advertising messages, instead of saying "Cheap dell laptops for sale" you should be more specific. It is better to have an ad message such as "Dell Dimension 2400 starting @ $800". The latter is clear & targeted, it includes a specific model number & price. Someone who sees this ad and clicks on it will MORE than likely purchase your item. Another tip is to check your campaign stats daily, you may need to edit keywords and increase your max CPC from time to time. The concept of "set it and forget it" will not work since the marketplace changes constantly. My last piece of advice is to keep in mind that while advertising can make a huge impact on your sales, you must first work on your listings before advertising. If you have listings that are overpriced, with many misspellings etc, and bad feedback it makes no sense to advertise since most buyers will still not be interested. But, if you are doing everything right and your sales aren't what they should be-- the answer may found in keywords advertising. The end.
